The most common method of installing temporary staging on a bridge is with cable rigging. Wire rope (cable) is attached to the structure and staging is attached to the wire rope. For vertical access (up the face of a concrete pier, or tower inspection) this usually consists of attaching one end of the cable to the top of the pier or tower, and using a Spider or similar electric powered basket or lift to ride up and down that cable. For horizontal access (underneath the deck of a bridge), two or more cables are attached to the structure underneath the deck (roadway) longitudinally, that is, parallel with the bridge and each other. These cables are usually secured to the bearing areas of the structure, and tensioned. An aluminum plank stage is installed into the frames that roll on these cables, and inspectors roll the length of the bridge on this staging.
Other methods used, as site conditions allow, include flat bottomed boats or barges with scaffolding or aerial lifts, or installation of temporary scaffolding on the structure without the use of cables.
